Service Learning in December: Community

What We Achieved in November

We spent the month collaborating on our Polar Express-themed S.T.E.A.M. Christmas tree, which was donated to the Hunt Memorial’s Festival of Trees. Students at 2nd Nature Academy teamed up with the creative minds at The Enrichment Center and The Painted Turtle for this project. Our tree was on display for the long weekend and has been raffled off, along with all of the other incredible contributions, to a local individual, family, or business. All proceeds from the event benefit the preservation of the Hunt Memorial Building, a Nashua historical landmark. We are excited to spot several TNOT families at the Festival of Trees during the annual Holiday Stroll in downtown Nashua!

We learned that the folks at Red Brick Clothing Company won our beautiful tree!  Before they went to pick it up, they noticed on Facebook that the Hillsborough County Child Advocacy Center was looking for a tree for the season. They were thrilled when the Mayotte Family, at Red Brick, generously offered to let them have the tree decorated by our students. We are so thankful to the Mayottes for paying the cheer forward! It’s just another great example of community coming together to support one another.

December’s Cause: Marguerite’s Place
December’s Theme: Community
December’s Goal: Collect Christmas gifts for mothers and children in crisis

Every year, we sponsor two families, each consisting of a single mother and her children, and our community comes together to buy them Christmas gifts they otherwise would not receive. You can impact your local community in large ways by doing what might feel like a small thing, such as purchasing a gift for someone else. Marguerite’s Place helps these mothers get back on their feet and become contributing members of society. The trickle-down effect of investing time, energy, and money into your community, and the return on investment (whether economic or emotional), can be enormous.

Marguerite’s Place is a local non-profit and “a transitional housing program for women and children in crisis.”

Call to Action

Our Christmas tree is up in the main front office, with only a few tags remaining, so grab yours today! We will be accepting donations under (and around) the tree until Tuesday, December 12th. Didn’t get a chance to grab a tag, but still want to give? You can give by donating items that fulfill general needs for Marguerite’s Place, such as household cleaning products, beauty and hygiene items, bedding & linens, baby needs, first aid and household medical supplies, and more.

Donated gifts should be new and unused items. Please wrap all wishlist gifts and tape the original tag onto the outside of the gift, so both front and back are accessible and legible for office staff. General needs donations do not need to be wrapped.
